ASK Italian - Community Project, 2022

In 2022, I was approached by ASK Italian to design and install artwork as part of a rebranding project. With a focus on local communities, I created several murals for the interior of their flagship site in Horsham, West Sussex.

ASK’s project brief was focussed on twinned towns, so I chose to centre the project around the Horsham’s connection with the famous poet Percy Shelley, who was born in nearby village of Warnham, but died tragically young off the coast of Italy. His ship, the ‘Don Juan’ sank during a storm in a bay area of the Tuscan coastline, now known as the Gulf of Poets. The nearby town of Lerici continues to honour Shelley today with a permanent monument. Coincidentally, 2022 marked the Bicentennial year of Shelley’s death.

A historic market town, Lerici mirrors Horsham in many ways, from its colourful houses, market square (piazza), narrow alleys, botanical gardens, medieval church and steeple. For the restaurant, I envisioned a space that flowed with the beauty of the Italian coast and Shelley’s poetry. Alongside the feature wall on the ground floor, I designed and created four additional murals, including artwork for the stairway and columns. Each piece was a mixture of collaged altered photography and original artwork, hand painted line work and gold leaf. In the bar area, I included three illustrated portraits to begin a community wall to celebrate notable town alumni.

Separately, I worked with the company’s marketing team to create digital artwork for ASK Italian’s marketing launch for the site, which was featured on the cover of gift boxes that contained sample products from local suppliers.

ASK Italian - Brighton Christmas Windows, 2022

For the Brighton ASK Italian site I created designs for the top and ground floor windows at the front of the building for Christmas. The brief required reference of the city’s local sites and culture, so I chose to feature The Lanes, The Royal Pavillion ice skating rink, and Brighton’s famous Boxing Day sea swimmers in minimalist white chalk. The window designs remained up for 5 weeks.
