“I recognise myself as a romantic; constantly seeking divine beauty in a flawed world. My paintings are somehow always introspective; I am forging my own personal folklore.”

About the Artist

Artist, Sam Flylightly (b.1986) spent her childhood between West Sussex and the Florida Keys. With a reverence for the ocean and storytelling, these experiences greatly influenced her choice of subject as an artist.

The development of Sam’s painting style evolved from illustrative watercolours to large-scale paintings on canvas and board.

Symbolic of transience and renewed life, the themes of memory and water are central to her art, as are storytelling and the female experience. This is also reflected in Sam’s process, as she chooses to allow compositions to organically develop, driven by the unpredictable nature of the medium used. Forms and figures emerge, and the addition of meditative fine lines offer detail and may act as a discussion of the threadlike path of time that was chosen.

Since graduating in 2011 with a BA from Goldsmiths, Sam has participated in group exhibitions in the UK and USA, and joined the Sussex Art Association (ASA) in 2016. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and America.

Sam lives and works in Brighton, Sussex, and is a member of Studio 106 in Hove.
